Hardy Elementary School

Beliefs About Homework ~ Hardy School

  1. Content
    * The most effective assignments:
    • can be completed independently
    • relate directly to work that has gone on in class
    • provide for rote practice as opposed to higher-level thinking
    • do not introduce new material
  2. Parent Involvement
    * Parents are most effectively involved:
    • when they help children process what has already been learned
    • by communicating any problems with homework completion to their child’s
      teacher
    • as monitors of time spent wisely on homework tasks
    • by reinforcing habits of responsibility and organization
    • by helping to connect school learning to “real life”
(e.g., interviews, real-life math work, etc.)
  3. Time
    * Time allocation for homework assignments:
    • increases gradually through the grades
    • is seen as a guideline and not a mandate
    • increases by 10 minutes per grade level, beginning in grade one:
      • Grade 1 — 10 minutes
      • Grade 2 — 20 minutes
      • Grade 3 — 30 minutes
      • Grade 4 — 40 minutes
      • Grade 5 — 50 minutes
    • includes the expectation that children read every night in addition to the times listed above
