Beliefs About Homework ~ Hardy School
- Content
The most effective assignments:
- can be completed independently
- relate directly to work that has gone on in class
- provide for rote practice as opposed to higher-level thinking
- do not introduce new material
- Parent Involvement
Parents are most effectively involved:
- when they help children process what has already been learned
- by communicating any problems with homework completion to their child’s
teacher
- as monitors of time spent wisely on homework tasks
- by reinforcing habits of responsibility and organization
- by helping to connect school learning to “real life”
(e.g., interviews, real-life math work, etc.)
- Time
Time allocation for homework assignments:
- increases gradually through the grades
- is seen as a guideline and not a mandate
- increases by 10 minutes per grade level, beginning in grade one:
- Grade 1 — 10 minutes
- Grade 2 — 20 minutes
- Grade 3 — 30 minutes
- Grade 4 — 40 minutes
- Grade 5 — 50 minutes
- includes the expectation that children read every night in addition to the times
listed above
