Dear Hardy Parents,
Summer vacation is here and the students are eager to take a well-deserved break from all their hard work! Although teachers and parents know that reading over the summer keeps children from losing ground and actually improves skills for the coming year, incorporating reading into the summer routine can be challenging.
What can parents do to support their child’s reading development over the summer? Enjoy your summer, and bring a book! Encourage your kids to read at the beach, at the park, on vacation, or at camp. Read in the car, on the subway, or standing in line.
Next fall when the students return, the teachers won’t just be asking, “What did you read this summer?” We will also be asking, “Where did you read this summer?!” Please snap a picture of your children finding ways to include reading in their summer fun to share in a school-wide display next September.
Hardy School students are expected to read a minimum number of hours specific to their fall grade level. Use this Reading Graph to keep track of your child's progress. To support Arlington Public School’s summer reading expectations, the Fox and Robbins’ libraries have created a motivating summer program that similarly defines expectations in minimum hours read. Therefore, any time spent reading this summer counts toward both programs!
Summer is a fabulous time to explore new genres, authors, and topics and the town librarians are always eager to help students find books of interest at a level that is just right for them.
In addition to contributing to the photo display, “Where did you read this summer?” please return your child’s Hardy School Summer Reading Graph so we can recognize and celebrate your child’s commitment to academic success and love of learning during an all-school assembly in the fall.
Enjoy your summer!
