Welcome to the second grade at Hardy!

Kamishibai stories

In second grade we cover a unit on Japan. This year we have decided to study Japan all year long, including “Kamishibai stories.” A Kamishibai story is told on a wooden stage (“Kamishibai theater”) with pictures displayed on the stage and words read by the speaker from the back.

Mr. Morse, the Hardy After–School director, read to the second graders after recess for three days. Each day the students were left in suspense wondering how the story would continue. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed listening to Mr. Morse.

The second graders are now writing their own Kamishibai stories during writing time. They are creating their own antagonist and protagonists with a problem and two possible solutions. The children are very excited about their stories and learning about the Kamishibai style of storytelling.

Below are some pictures from the Kamishibai reading by Mr. Morse.
