November 3 in the school library
Come to two consecutive meetings at PTO and you are a voting member!
President: Cedrine Bell
Treasury: Lee Powers
Recording Secretary: Sarah Evans
Communication Secretary: Jill Swilling
Meeting called to order by President Cedrine Bell at 6:36pm
Attendance: There were 14 members in attendance; a quorum was reached.
Guests: Bill Hayner and Representative Sean Garballey
Representative Sean Garballey introduced himself and said he would be stopping by PTO meetings to get a sense of community issues. He encouraged everyone to email him with questions or concerns.
7:05-7:15 Treasurer’s report
Not a lot of activitiy. But appeals coming in – from the backpack mailer. 8160 so far from 50 families.
6:40-6:50 Bill Hayner - School committee Member Report
As Sean said – part of my job is also to hear from folks. Feel free to email me.
Playground: authorized up to $60k during summer but postponed because of modules. Yet progress is too slow. Bill has asked everyone up to and including superintendent with question "Has a date been set to start repairs?" No response so three days later, he sent a formal public call for answer. Super answered with “Contract awarded and when parts are here – we should start work."
Contract was awarded Sept 15 at $45,700. 45+ days waiting for parts.
No excuse for the delays. Next Thursday at meeting myself and facilities person will ask at committee why the delays are there. One of the questions for the town planning meeting he will ask is 45 days from contract to start work normal? Sean G says it should have taken 30 days from budget approval to building. That is the standard.
Next step at some point, the district needs to figure out who owns the playground. Right now, not a clear ownership so takes too long to fix.
6:50-7:05 Principal’s report
Character day was awesome. Costumes were appropriate. And the facility got into it. And the Giving Tree book was the theme for faculty. Idea was to talk about characters and where it takes you. Principal read librarian’s book. Books and character was the theme.
Council Note. Ongoing strategy of what digital communication looks like at all grades and among all classes between teachers and parents. Each grade year, the website experience for parents will be about the same. That is the next layer of communication for parents.
Open House. All positive feedback. No emails about schedule! One thing from teachers – wasn’t enough time. So we’ll add some more time next year. “What we do around here” book – parents received it. Ultimately it will be virtual.
Q: Professional Day. As far as responsive classroom – ongoing training?.
A: Nothing for responsive during PD day. About 90% of staff has done responsive training and rest will be trained this summer. Even PE, SpecED team and TAs went to training. What that means is language is similar, strategies are similar. Because part of a woven quilt vs just a few people knowing.
Maintaining sustainability: Focus groups at Hardy is about closing circle. Google docs. RC texts – power of words. A lot of the responsive stuff is brought into meetings with staff, communications.
One thing we have in Jan is a PD and we may want to sent café staff. May need PTO cash. Last year, six folks shared time. This year three full-time staff. Captain recess is Will outside supported by grade TA out there. Now they are RC folks, too. (may be able to use AEF money).
JS: Teachers like RC. Maybe a refresher course this summer with other teachers.
Q: Define what PD day vs Early Release
ER: Give teachers common planning time. Look at data across days. For example: we had a building meeting today and chatted about data protocol. Then grade levels got together so all classes are on same page and working together. Data meeting part. Look at protocols to inform teaching and curriculum. They look at homework/student work and see if things are working. Then another section is PD. Teachers across district get together. Each one is clustered to a topic like reading, etc.
PD: larger chunk of time to have all district teachers together. 1, 2,3 was science. 4,5 math and k is tools. Showcase and hear from other schools so other teachers can get ideas as to how to teach a topic. Also look at subject leaders to evaluate more on a global way. Middle school and highschool are included too. Five hours! Not just the Tuesday 50 minutes.
7:15-7:25 Book fair event report Nov. 16th-20th (Jill Swilling).
November 16-20. Setting up on Thursday 12th. Extended shopping on Tuesday from 1-2 and Thursday after dropoff until 9a. Then Thursday pm is shop and coffee. Flyer in the backpack.
7:25-7:30 website report
New PTO section is live. Tabs include About Us. Officers. Support Us. Volunteer, Events, Room Parents, Hardy Store. Trying to have a survey every few months to get feedback from parents.
7:30-7:50 Other PTO upcoming events
Thanksgiving Food Drive (Katie Garrett)
-we need big box for lobby. Accepting fresh food this year. Nov 19 is pick up for fresh food – bring that in on 11/18.
-Julie Harrington says thanks for 4th grade Witches kids theater show. R. Dahl book. Author’s craft is a big thing upper grades talk about. Great enrichment. What did you notice about play that represents author’s craft. What would R Dahl like and what was different. PTO paid for that via enrichment fund. And some of the C’s are there.
Giving Display (Amy Reese): (Dec). Coordinating with 5th grade. Board exists. Kids will take things off. Make sure everyone knows all about talking with parents. And people can go into front lobby. A couple mornings/drop-offs we will display outside. Wish lists. So don’t worry about brand. And you can go in on a gift with other people/families.
Craft fair in December? In past the lighting ceremony in front had a craft fair attached. Pick a cause? Raised for mimi before. So maybe we can raise money for something.
