6:40-7:05 - Principal Report
ALICE: A safety drill. Won’t use the word Alice. The teachers had a drill on April 4th. Only 16 people came to the information night. You can go to other schools for info nights. Only 4 emails or so from concerned parents and no teachers have heard any concerns from parents.
On Thursday each grade level together on their own and one of the teachers or all of teachers (by grade) will talk about Tuesday drill. First responders on site as if event is real. When KD is over intercom she says “unwanted intruder in building” vs specifics about a gun, etc. Scenario 1: lock and block. Scenario 2: evacuate. The kids are not going to walk to Boys and Girls club. We’ll be doing that at another time – probably in the fall (that way we have summer to plan the evacuation).
Advice from Cindy and Steve to parents who don’t want the drill to happen: you can keep your child home or keep child out of training on Tuesday. Purpose is not to scare the kids.
NOTE: parents will get an alert call now to parents and calling all in the neighborhood. At Bishop there was two police, ladder and engine. No sirens here at Hardy.
PAL: Pause, look for an adult and listen to adult.
20 minute training, 20 minute drill. Total time: 40 minute block for kids.
Teachers have trained already in the building and had the drill. They got to practice both evacuate and block.
Materials arrive April 11. Parcc is after holiday break. Each grade is 4 minutes level of math, 3 sessions ela. 5th also does 2 science MCAS. The ELA sessions vary on time depending on grade. But all do seven.
Timing. You can’t double a session in a day. So can’t have a 60 in morning and 60 in afternoon. So each student can only take one session a day. 3rd graders are testing by themselves. 4th and 5th will be sometimes testing on same days.
April 28 – start and pretty much every day. With MCAS we tried to not test on Monday or Friday. But this time, all days are test days but really just an hour or 1.5 hours a day.
Help for kids: EFFICIENT ANSWERING – so don’t show your all your work if you don’t need to. And in MCAS, only one question was correct but PARCC may have more than one correct so READ ENTIRE TEXT. And CHECK YOUR WORK – some questions may have three sections! Or one! Do you best.
This year: on paper and technically the numbers/results don’t count.
Note. K,1, 2 specials may get swapped with the testing time. And quiet hallway behavior. Note. The IEPs may need to be juggled during that time.
And thank you for the Teacher Appreciation Week. Fantastic lunch!
6:50-7:00 Treasurer Report
No report. Sweatshirts from fall appeal went out. Another appeal letter is going out hopefully before the holidays. Number of field trips coming up – teachers will invoice treasurer for that one. Lots of sweatshirts for sale. More official number in May. Also we ordered safety cushion for basketball poles.
7:10-30 PTO Upcoming events
Thank yous: Thank you for Jill and Patsy for Teacher Appreciation. And thanks to Bonnie, Katie for the Beach Party. People were really thrilled and a lot of happy parents. Kids were happy.
Recap of Teacher Appreciation Jill Swilling and Patsy O’Brien: Jill. She has worked on it for five years. This year, the better was the room parent involvement. A lot of room parents did extra things like flowers and gifts for teachers.
We had more trouble from Whole Food and Chilly Cow donations. Make sure person asks early in case those fall through you can go to plan B. Patsy is taking over in 2016-17.
>Room Parent Coordinator for 2016-17. Anyone interested in role? We are hoping room parents are in place before the start of school year (during summer right after the class lists go out the door).
KD: Two more things! Bishop lost a second grader last week. I don’t know what the PTOs do but we’ll most likely send something over. And Saturday is a memorial at 10 or 11a. The Bucks. Other thing.
Donna Williams has resigned. Her family has had a lot of sickness. She feels like she wants to be home. Her daughter is off to college next year. She’ll take a leave of absence and won’t be returning full time. So we will re-hire. Her last day is the day before April vacation. She is low profile. Staff will have a party.
Replacement is Petula who was here during Donna’s absence, is here for remainder of school year. Not posting now so we’ll wait until summer. She will most likely apply.
