6:41 - Kate Leary – The Vote and Expansion Issue
Debt exclusion vote on June 14 (Tuesday)
ONE QUESTION on ballot is the Thompson addition. School enrollment will use Gibbs as middle school solution. No decision on what grade(s). May not be 6-8 because making it work will be expensive. All town grade 6th will make more fiscal sense. Needham has an all-sixth town. Most on town board is leaning toward all sixth. (Thompson and Gibbs is one question because not MSBA)
ONE QUESTION: Minuteman budget. Not sure if the rebuild is happening – need more town votes. If one town says ‘no’ it won’t be done.
ONE QUESTION: feasibility study – MSBA next steps. (anything related to this has to be separate question).
Kicked campaign into gear in terms of the expansion and people voting yes to Question 1 (vote yes to invest). At the moment we are looking for leadership at precinct levels to find ‘yes’ voters. We need about 5,000 yes votes. There is a voter universe being built by precinct captains.
Kate says "Do you know 10 people who will vote yes?" Yes? Talk to those people! Encourage them to go vote. Pricinct 2, 4, Maybe 3 Definitely need help in precinct 6th finding/talking the yes vote. Time commitment: one meeting per week until June 14th.
Contact Kate to help.
Perhaps Gibbs would be all ready by 2018? Ambitious perhaps. Maybe half way through 2018? Or 2019? Thompson expansion won’t even have shovels in ground until October 2018.
There will be another debt exclusion vote for High School in 2018-19 or 20. Language already put in that Hardy will need to be expanded just like Thompson.
6:40-6:55 Principal’s report.
This morning at numbers. We are at 84 kindergartners. And that makes me nervous because it is May. If we get 100 that means 25 a piece. Right now 21 each class.
Short term plan. Cafeteria. Take curtain down and prepare space for stadium seating – will have a railing to keep kids from falling off. Need more table space.
Expansion. Most likely modulars from Thompson will go to Hardy. Then we’ll make a build plan. Still talk about being able to buffer kids to Thompson and return to 3 classes in K. But no. Numbers are saying 4+ k classes going forward because of greater enrollment.
Expand HASP. How can we do that?
Expand outside space. How can we do that?
MSBA questions have to be separate. Probably high school and Hardy questions must be separate though could figure out how to merge.
Third special education teacher in 2016-17! One reason the staff position went to Hardy because of a strong core teacher model.
Looking to hiring Ms Pielech replacement – she is retiring. And a 2nd grade teacher. And a 5th grade teacher. Teachers will need to be ELL certified. But if not certified, we’ll get them there after hiring.
Playground. For the last couple of days students are playing manhunt. Means they are running around the building and hunting each other. Kids can’t be here by themselves. Even in 5th grade. All should go home. Want to return? Fine. But the playground and after school need to organize first.
PARC is going well. Kids seem relaxed. 3rd ELA done. 4th and 5th next.
Math Week. June 6-10.
School council met. The plan. Every other year math week approach. So first year was indepth (we’ve done three years in a row). Trying not to repeat same stuff every year. Lots of duplicate origami. This year instead of big program.
Math Morning – exhibits with place values and number sets. Why learn place value before add/subtract, etc. Why do we do math the way we do?
Parents do math with kids
Friday - Math Day Tournament (vs origami, etc). Kindergarten will be at beach!
-1 pattern block game
2/3 rock paper scissors math game
4/5 – dice math game / tenzie
>will need PTO enrichment money
Last three years – he averaged of the actual numbers.
Appeal. One more appeal letter.
Spend down extra funds.
Walkathon hasn’t been finalized
Promotional is low. Meaning the extra shopping stuff
Picture day right on
CD/DVD a bit lower
One time grant was just that
Events net gain. Lots of cash at BBQ.
Money on spiritwear is a bit low because we had a giveaway.
(60 qualified based on giving/40 asked)
Book fair was low because we needed a custodian on Saturday. $250 but maybe bookseller should pay because they couldn’t be there on Friday.
Teacher supplemental – 15 teachers used.
Enrichment – to be spent
Playground equipment – just the elmos and two sets of pads.
Hardship science camp
Miscellaneous – still cash around
PTO Admin is for finances and he paid for taxes twice so next year is free!
Debbie Pielech - purchased a house on Lake Waukewan in NH. Renovated it. Might be nice to have something related to the lake. Outstanding question of whether PTO does retirement.
